Early automotive documents

Antique car title certificates from 1915–1949

Explore collectible certificates from motoring’s early decades, including prewar American and European cars with period serial, engine, and chassis-number formats.

Researching early certificates

Before standardized VINs, a certificate may identify a vehicle through a manufacturer serial, chassis, frame, or engine number. The correct convention depends on the maker and year.

1915–1929

Early documents may use engine or short serial numbers and period terms for body type, horsepower, or model.

1930–1939

Compare make, series, body style, and every serial character with reliable marque-specific references.

1940–1949

Wartime and immediate postwar records may reflect production interruptions and changing form designs.

Document condition

Folds, stamps, handwriting, punched areas, and issuing-jurisdiction details can all matter to collectors.

How to check the collection

  1. Open the vehicle lookup.
  2. Select the year, make, and model printed on the collectible certificate you want.
  3. Review the availability message, then call or send an inquiry for details.

Collectible certificates are offered as historical documents. They are not automatically proof of current vehicle ownership and should not be used to misrepresent, retitle, or register a vehicle. Rules vary by jurisdiction; contact the appropriate motor-vehicle authority for legal or registration questions.
